Walnut Asymmetrical Table

George Nakashima’s Walnut Asymmetrical Table is a 1966 work in American black walnut. The top is made from a single crescent-form slab with an inset rosewood butterfly cleat, chamfered corner edges, shaved canted edges and chiseled enrichments. It is raised on three turned tapering legs, with the underside inscribed “STEWART.” The table is accompanied by a digital copy of the original order card.

About the Maker
George Nakashima (1905–1990) was an American architect and woodworker, and one of the most important figures in 20th-century American craft. Trained in architecture at the University of Washington and MIT, he opened his woodworking business in 1945 and built a practice around direct contact with wood, tools, clients and craftsmen. Nakashima believed the natural character of wood should guide the finished object, with each board selected for its grain, irregularities and individual presence.
