Rare Coffee Table

Chess/coffee table by Paul Evans Studio, made in the United States circa 1970. The table has a torch-cut, welded, polychromed and patinated steel base with a square glass top. The base is formed from grouped vertical steel elements arranged in a compact grid.

About the Maker
Paul Evans (1931–1987) was an iconic American furniture designer, sculptor and artist known for his distinctive metal furniture. Born in Newtown, Pennsylvania, Evans studied metalwork, sculpture and jewelry at the Philadelphia Textile Institute, the School for American Craftsmen at the Rochester Institute of Technology and Cranbrook Academy of Art. He later settled in New Hope, Pennsylvania, where he worked with furniture designer Phillip Lloyd Powell and began developing the sculpted metal forms that would define his career.
