Digamma Sofa

Designed by Ignazio Gardella in 1957, the Digamma settee is a rare two-seat version of one of his most celebrated designs for Gavina. Its architectural enameled-steel frame supports an adjustable upholstered back, while curved elements and polished brass “duck feet” soften its rationalist construction with Gardella’s characteristic wit. Produced in considerably fewer numbers than the Digamma armchair, the settee represents an uncommon form within this important series of postwar Italian furniture.

About the Maker:
Ignazio Gardella (1905–1999) was an Italian architect and designer. He studied civil engineering in Milan and later earned an architecture degree from the IUAV University of Venice in 1949. In 1947, Gardella co-founded Azucena with Luigi Caccia Dominioni and Corrado Corradi Dell’Acqua to produce furniture and furnishings for the buildings they designed. His work was included in the Museum of Modern Art’s 1954 exhibition The Modern Movement in Italy: Architecture and Design.
