About the Maker: Larry Bell is an American artist born in Chicago in 1939 and closely associated with the Southern California Light and Space movement. Dia Art Foundation describes him as “a leading figure” of the movement, noting that since the early 1960s he has explored light, color and volume through glass. Bell is best known for his vacuum-coated glass sculptures, whose reflective and translucent surfaces alter with light, space and the viewer’s position. Hauser & Wirth describes him as “one of the most renowned and influential artists to emerge from the Los Angeles art scene of the 1960s,” recognized for his refined treatment of glass and his investigations of light, reflection and shadow. His work spans painting, works on paper, sculpture and furniture design, but glass remains central to his practice. The Guggenheim notes that Bell developed his well-known vacuum-coated glass cubes in the 1960s, using surface, transparency and reflection to challenge the boundaries between object and environment.
