Born in 1917, he became known for furniture, textiles, accessories and interiors defined by simplicity, utility and a lack of unnecessary decoration. His work was shaped in part by New England and Shaker design traditions, combining slender lines with sculptural forms. McCobb designed for major furniture lines including Planner Group, Directional, Predictor, Calvin Group and others, and also consulted for companies such as Singer, Alcoa, Goodyear and Columbia Records. He received multiple Good Design Awards from the Museum of Modern Art and the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s Contribution to Better Design Award in 1959.
