Special-Order Triple Hanging Wall Cabinet

Special-order triple hanging wall cabinet by George Nakashima, made by Nakashima Studio in 1960. The cabinet is constructed in American black walnut with pandanus cloth sliding doors. It features an overhanging top with a free edge and three sliding doors, each concealing one adjustable shelf. The reverse is inscribed with the original client’s name, “Glasser,” and the piece is accompanied by digital copies of the original order card and invoice.

About the Maker
George Nakashima (1905–1990) was an American architect and woodworker, and one of the most important figures in 20th-century American craft. Trained in architecture at the University of Washington and MIT, he opened his woodworking business in 1945 and built a practice around direct contact with wood, tools, clients and craftsmen. Nakashima believed the natural character of wood should guide the finished object, with each board selected for its grain, irregularities and individual presence.
