Rare Painted Cassone

An exceptional Italian Late Gothic painted cassone, or marriage chest, dating from the late 15th to early 16th century. The hand-painted front depicts a pair of mythological sea maidens supporting overflowing baskets of fruit amid scrolling foliate ornament and geometric borders, while its original forged iron lock and richly worn painted surface reflect more than five centuries of history.

About the Cassone:
The cassone was among the most important pieces of furniture in Renaissance Italy. Traditionally commissioned to celebrate a marriage, these elaborately decorated chests formed part of a bride's dowry and were displayed prominently within the home. Wealthy families often commissioned painted cassoni depicting classical mythology, biblical narratives, allegorical figures, or symbols of prosperity and fertility, reflecting both artistic taste and family status. Today, surviving examples are increasingly scarce, particularly those retaining significant portions of their original painted surfaces and early iron hardware.
