Chest of drawers - "Bastoni" Model

This chest of drawers by Ettore Sottsass, model Bastoni, was originally designed in 1963 and later produced by Poltronova. The piece is defined by its rhythmic composition of horizontal elements, with painted wood surfaces contrasted by walnut veneer. Its structured, linear form reflects Sottsass’s early exploration of geometry and material, preceding his later work that would come to define postmodern Italian design.

About the Maker:
Born in 1917 in Innsbruck, Austria, Ettore Sottsass was one of the most influential designers of the 20th century. After establishing his architectural practice in Milan, he became a key figure at Olivetti in the 1950s and 1960s, where he helped shape some of the company’s most celebrated designs, including the Elea 9003 computer and the Valentine typewriter. In 1981, he founded the Memphis Group, an international collective that redefined design through its radical use of color, form, and material, fundamentally challenging the principles of modernism. Sottsass received the Compasso d’Oro and numerous international honors, and his work is held in major museum collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Centre Pompidou.
